One of my readers commentee on my Gardening With Your Children post mentioned that she would like to read about how to get her children to help in the garden without having to fight to get them there. I realized this might be a common problem so I thought it would make for an interesting blog post. The only thing is, I don't really have that problem...

Spring seems to have finally come to Saskatchewan! With the warmer weather comes all sorts of wonderful learning opportunities and teachable moments that we don't get at other times of the year. Continue reading to see three reasons why I love homeschooling on the farm in spring.
The kids and I have so many projects on the go right now that it's hard to keep it all straight sometimes! I have shared some of our projects with you before. As they are ongoing projects, I thought I would show you how they are progressing.
Last week I took a break from blogging. Since it was Easter, I called it my Easter break :) This post is heavy on the pictures, as I promised to take lots of pictures to show you why I was too busy to blog last week :) We had a lot of fun and I hope you enjoy our pictures too!
My husband and I both try to make sure we spend one-on-one time with each of our children. When I take just one of the kids with me, I call it a "date". The kids love having one parent all to themselves once in awhile, and I love being able to focus on just one child at a time sometimes. Our dates are always a special time for both me and whichever child is with me.
Princess and I both love flowers and working in the garden, which I seem to have inherited from my own mom. My mom told me about a great opportunity for us to start getting our hands in the dirt earlier than usual. R & R Greenhouse and Gardens near Limerick, Saskatchwan offers workshops where you can go and get an early start on your spring gardening! Princess and I signed up for the Plant Your Own Hanging Baskets workshop and went to play in the dirt :) The last month was mighty cold, with the kind of weather that makes you wonder if spring will ever come. But now that it's mid-March, we are seeing the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel! The last week has been beautiful, full of warm, sunny days and lots of melting snow. The farmers are starting to talk about seeding, my mother-in-law, who is an avid birdwatcher, saw some robins, and a friend told us they saw geese flying overhead yesterday! All signs of spring in Saskatchewan :)
The sun and the warm weather have been calling me outside, and I have been happy to ignore the housework for an half hour or so each day to go "look for signs of spring" with the kids outside. I figure that is a wonderful half hour homeschool science ;) |
