We went on our first field trip of the new school year yesterday. We went to the lake. Yep, I consider that a field trip. We believe that every experience in life is an opportunity to learn something. So, what did we learn at the lake? Earlier this summer we learned about the difference between frogs and toads, and we’ve compared the info to many frogs over the summer months, but we have not seen any toads. Yesterday, we found a toad, and it was really neat to hear the kids pointing out all the ways it was different from a frog. Little Man said, “It’s bumpy!” Princess pointed out that it is much “fatter” than a frog. We also looked at its legs because toads are supposed to have shorter legs than frogs. We decided that their legs really are shorter. Since we were at the beach, I, of course, was fishing. Catching a fish always makes for an exciting science lesson. I was very proud of my Little Man when he was able to identify the fish right away as a Jack. When I got bit by the fish, we learned that fish have teeth. Jack’s have especially sharp teeth! When I was filleting the fish, I had two four year olds (our Munchkin and her cousin) watching me very closely and asking a million questions. A favourite beach activity of ours is collecting rocks. Little Man has started a business, called Rock Treasures, with rocks. We have a rock tumbler that we borrow from Great-Grandma and we like to find rocks that will polish up nicely. Each of the kids have their own collections and we try to identify what kind of rock we have found. We also use certain shaped rocks for crafts, which Little Man sells in his business. Let us not forget that swimming is Phys. Ed! So, we did indeed get in a full day of school at the beach! Welcome to our homeschooling world!
