One of Little Man's dreams is to go to the African Rainforest some day. We have studied a little about Africa previously, but I decided to focus on helping him learn about the rainforest this year. Our first rainforest project was to make a rainforest terrarium! We bought some plants that seemed like tropical rainforest plants (and were small enough to fit in a terrarium), like an African violet and some vines. Then we found all the plastic animals in the house and sorted them into animals that might live in a rainforest and animals that don't live in the rainforest. As we sorted animals we talked about why they may or may not live in a rainforest. Munchkin grabbed a polar bear and sorted it onto the side that does not live in the rainforest, so I asked her, "Why do you think a polar bear wouldn't live in the rainforest?" At first, she thought I was telling her she was wrong and she quickly put it in the other group. I asked her the question again, and after she thought about it, she took the polar bear back out of the rainforest group and told me, "Polar bears need ice and snow". So, we decided that polar bears do not live in the rainforest. The kids spent a good amount of time playing with the animals in the rainforest terrarium, hiding the lizard under the leaves where the tiger couldn't find him; putting the monkeys up in the "tree"; pretending the giraffe was munching leaves. Let's not forget the dinosaurs hiding in the jungle either :) Do you know have any fun ideas for learning about the African rainforest? I would love to hear your ideas, so please leave a comment telling me all about it :) Thanks! If you enjoyed this post, you may want to follow Dot-to-Dot Connections on Facebook or Pinterest.
