We chose Math-U-See as our curriculum. I like their hands-on approach, using manipulative blocks similar to LEGO, and the fun activities they suggest along with the lessons. I also like their DVDs, which have a short video that goes along with each lesson and does a good job of explaining what the student needs to know.
Little Man reviewed place value, using marshmallows with skewers stuck in them, and Cheerios to put over the skewers to represent the numbers. The number cards are ones I made at the suggestion of Math-U-See, way back when we first started using Math-U-See. (I got the template for the cards here.) Anytime we can use edible manipulatives, Little Man is very attentive! I would lay out the number cards and he would put the right amount of Cheerios on the skewers. If he could then say the number correctly, he got to eat the Cheerios that were on the skewers. | Princess reviewed her inequalities with LEGO. All my children love LEGO and we have tons of it, so I am trying to find more ways to use it in our homeschool. Again, I used the cards I made for Math-U-See. I also made a card with the greater than / less than and equals symbols on it. I put the number cards on the table, she decided which way the symbol went and then built the answer with the LEGO pieces. She is very visual, so I think it helped her to be able to see the difference between greater than and less than with the LEGO bricks. *The LEGO Math Game {Greater Than / Less Than} comes from One Perfect Day. |
