We saw her again later as we stood behind her in the check-out line. She asked my 8 year old why she was not in school (since it was the middle of the afternoon on a school day). Princess informed her that we homeschool, and I prepared myself for the usual response, but was surprised to hear this wonderful lady say, "You are learning how to shop. That is a very good thing to learn!" As we packed up our carts the sweet lady commented again on what wonderful helpers I had. She then told us that she misses her "five helpers". Then she told me, "People look at you as though it's strange when you have children and have them helping you, but it is such a wonderful thing!" Then she left while we finished packing the cart.
While thinking about it on the way home, I wished I had thought to thank her for her kind words! (I don't remember saying much of anything in the conversation, as I was too busy directing my helpers and reminding them not to put the bread under the heavy stuff.) Too often people only make negative comments, or give you looks that let you know that they don't approve of how your children are behaving or that you are out with them in the middle of the day when they should be in school. This lady, although she did not say she homeschooled, seems to understand the heart of this homeschool mama! She encouraged my children, and she encouraged me! I pray that God will bless her for her kindness, and also that He will lead each of you moms to someone like her today too!
