My seven year old son, Little Man, found a nest with four eggs in it and he has been watching it and taking pictures of it all summer. He agreed to do a guest post for my blog to tell us about "his" baby birds :) I was climbing the tree and found a nest. There were no eggs in it when I found it. I kept checking it to see if a bird lived in it or if it was an old nest. A few days later there were four eggs in the nest! Mom let me use her camera to take pictures of the eggs and then we searched on the computer to see what kind of bird laid the eggs. I tried to get pictures of the bird that laid the eggs, but she flew away every time we tried to take a picture. Mom finally got this picture and it was the best we could get of the mama bird. It is a cedar waxwing. The cedar waxwing has a black mask around her eyes and yellow on the tip of her tail. After a long, long time there were three babies and one egg had not hatched yet. The next day the egg still had not hatched. The day after that the egg had finally hatched. I barely touched one of them, but the mom bird did not abandon them. (Mommy said not to touch them again!) These are the babies, a little bit older. They have very tiny feathers. As you can see, they were hoping I would feed them. When we came home from camping for four days I checked on the babies and they had changed a lot! They were so fluffy and big that the mama could not fit in the nest anymore! The next day they could fly. Can you see in the picture that they have yellow at the tip of their tails? The day after they started flying I got so close I could have touched them, but I didn't. After that they did not come back to the nest anymore. As a homeschool mama I could not have been happier with this little project that Little Man so enthusiastically took up, without any help from me! What a perfect, real-life science lesson! I was also thrilled when he agreed to "write" a blog post for me. (He dictated to me what he wanted to say and I typed it.) He took all the pictures himself! This is the first time I have really let him use my camera and I think he did an excellent job! Princess also has a nest she has been watching this summer. She has agreed to share with you about "her" birds too. You can look forward to her guest post next week. If you enjoyed this post, please share it with others so they can enjoy it too!

I know! They are sweet! And I doubt Little Man will forget about them anytime soon! 9/19/2014 10:14:23 am
Oh wow! So cool! They're so cute in a hairless, weird kind of way. 9/22/2014 02:28:34 am
Haha! I love that - "They're so cute in a hairless, weird kind of way." I know what you mean though :) I was blessed by Little Man's pictures because I would not have been able to see them otherwise, at least not without breaking a few branches off our apple tree if I tried to climb it... ;) Leave a Reply. |
