Our little Munchkin is now five years old! Munchkin is also a huge animal lover, so for her birthday party we visited a petting zoo with some friends. If you live in southwest Saskatchewan, I highly recommend visiting Gramma Zoo Exotics! They have quite a variety of animals and the kids had a great time! First we got to meet the goats, sheep, ponies and zebus. Zebus are miniature cattle. Gramma Zoo is the only zebu breeder in Canada. You can learn more about them here. One of Munchkin's favourite animals is a donkey but she has never actually seen a real donkey before. She was thrilled to finally see a real donkey! At first I had to hold her as she was not so sure she wanted to get down among all those animals, but they were all so friendly and gentle that she soon warmed up to them and enjoyed petting the donkeys. We first met Glenda from Gramma Zoo Exotics at the Exotic Animal sale where we got our first bunnies. While there, Little Man got to hold a baby miniature goat and I decided they are one of my favourite animals :) Maybe some day we will have miniature goats, just for fun! Another of Munchkin's favourite animals are bunnies. At Gramma Zoo Exotics they had rex bunnies (regular rabbits), lion hair bunnies and great big French lop bunnies. The French lops were so big, yet so adorable! They looked just like a great, big, stuffed toy! The one in the picture is a male named Snickers. Snickers is bigger than Glenda's pomeranian dog! Gramma Zoo has all kind of fowl too. Many different kinds of chickens, quails, pheasants, peacocks, geese and ducks. I loved the beautiful, male peacocks! Gramma Zoo is part of the Egg and Ex Hatching Program and you can get eggs and incubators from them too. I think that might be a future homeschool project for us :) I would love to hatch some of the adorable button quails! After we saw all the animals the kids got to play at Gramma Zoo's playground. Normally Glenda sets up a bouncy castle for the kids too, but it was raining when we were there so we didn't get the bouncy castle. The kids had fun anyway, despite the rain. When planning our trip to Gramma Zoo I had mentioned to Glenda that we wanted to get a male lion hair bunny and she put me in touch with a family that has lion hair bunnies. (They even happen to be homeschoolers!) After we left Gramma Zoo Exotics our next stop was to pick up our new bunny, Mr. Snuggles. Each of our girls had gotten female bunnies already (and Princess blogs about the bunnies on her bunny blog), so Mr. Snuggles is Little Man's bunny. Little Man did not want a bunny when we first got our rabbits, but it did not take long for him to decide he wanted one too :) Now we are officially bunny breeders! I have to tell you one more thing about Munchkin's birthday. This is a proud mommy moment :) I posted before about when Princess took a cake decorating course. Munchkin's birthday was a chance for Princess to practice her cake decorating skills and I must say that I think she did an amazing job! She made munchkin this sweet ladybug cake! I am certain that Princess did a better job than I could have done! She is definitely the official cake decorator in our home from now on! Munchkin told me that this was her "best birthday"! It was a day she won't soon forget. The kids all had fun and I love the fact that we can call this science class too ;) If you enjoyed this post, please share it with others so they can enjoy it too! I have to admit that Munchkin was not the only one who had fun - I loved seeing all the animals too, and especially seeing Munchkin and the other children enjoying themselves so much! 6/20/2014 10:05:57 am
My little ones love animals...what fun! Beautiful cake too! I want to do a ladybug cake for baby girl's 1st...any tips?? Thanks for sharing at FTF! 6/20/2014 01:29:06 pm
I asked Princess if she had any tips for you and she said that you need LOTS of red food colouring or your ladybug will be pink :) Which reminds me, I need to put red food colouring on my shopping list as she used it all up on the ladybug cake. 6/25/2014 09:29:09 am
