While Little Man was watching "his" cedar waxwing babies grow, Princess had a nest she was keeping an eye on too. "Her" nest belonged to a mourning dove. She got great pictures, not only of the babies, but also of the mother dove! I will let her tell you all about "her" mourning doves herself. These two eggs are the children of a brave, mother dove. This baby hatched first. This baby does not have much for feathers yet and his eyes are closed. The mother mourning dove built her nest in an apple tree. This is the first picture I got of her, before she became brave. This was as close as I could get before she flew away. Now both babies have hatched! This was when it was raining and the mother was being brave! Can you see how close I got to her? I even touched her after I took this picture! The baby mourning doves have their eyes open now. Now the babies have lots of feathers! The mother stills sits on top of them. The baby on the left tried to fly out of the nest but it landed on the grass near our dog. My brother quickly picked it up before the dog got it and we put it back in the nest. The next day they flew away. My favourite part of this project was that I got to touch the mommy mourning dove and that I got to hold one of the babies right before it flew away. *Back to Mom: I must say that I was surprised and am incredibly proud of the pictures Princess took! I could not even approach the tree the nest was in without the mother bird flying away! For Princess to be able to get close enough to take such pictures and to even touch the bird took patience and perseverance that I did not know she was capable of! I thought about getting her to write down things like how old the birds were when their eyes opened, things that would make it more of a "real" science project, but I am glad I didn't. I am certain I would have ruined the project if I had! Seeing what she learned and was able to do completely on her own was worth more than anything I could have assigned for her to do! If you ever get a chance to let your children watch a bird nest over the summer, I highly recommend you do it! It was such an amazing learning experience for my children!
