Our first fall sale this year was at a Senior’s Center, which I love because many of the people there are little, old ladies who love children. We get to hear stories about their grandchildren and they like to support my children’s businesses by buying little gifts for their own grandchildren. Everyone is so friendly and it is a safe place to take my children. The Center has three sales every year, one in the spring and two in the fall, so many of the people there know us quite well from the years that we have been going there. They phone and ask me if “the little princess” is going to get a table again this year:)
When we are at sales I encourage the children to make eye contact with people walking by, to make sure they smile and are ready to answer any questions and even take the initiative to start the conversation themselves. Most people can’t resist a child who smiles at them and invites them to see the things they have made :) When they make a sale I let the kids take the money and I help them through the mental math as we figure out how much change to give their customers.
I love that the kids are learning practical life skills and can see why they need to learn that 2+2=4. I love seeing their confidence levels go up when so many people tell them how talented they are. I love that we are working with their interests and making learning fun for them. The kids love making and spending their own money. My husband loves that I usually bring home pie from the sales. It’s a win-win situation where we are all happy, and I like to think we are bringing joy to other people too.
