Homeschool Astronomy - A Review of Star Chronicles

For our homeschool science we have been studying the stars!  I love the stars!  It is not unknown for us to bundle up and go outside late at night to watch the stars, especially when there is a special show on :)  God really does the best fireworks shows!

Star Chronicles, by Dawnita Fogleman, is a Bible based study of the stars.  The first thing that caught my attention was her disclaimer about what this study is NOT about:
What this book is NOT:  It is NOT a book of zodiac, astrology, or horoscopes.  You will find NOTHING of the kind in these pages.  There are references to myths and legends and they are clearly stated as such for historical purposes only.

Dawnita has done a lot of research to get to the truth behind the stories about the stars.  I love that I can read this to my kids without having to worry about what is true and what is not.  There is enough info in here that we could go on rabbit trails to explain a little about the myths and what astrology is, but not enough that I have to worry that my children are getting info that I don't want them to have right now.

I love that this books is filled with Bible verses!  I love being able to bring the Bible into our every day lives!  It is also really neat to see how so many of the stars tell Bible stories or prophecies!  I had never thought of the constellations that way before!  I also found it interesting that even though I didn't think of the constellations that way, it seemed to come naturally for my children!  When I showed them the picture of Sagittarius, Princess immediately said, "That's Jesus riding on a white horse!"

We did this as an extra on top of our regular school work, so I did not add much to the study.  Just reading the book itself was informative enough to keep my children's attention!  They found it fascinating, as did I!  It helped that the sections were kept short, so the kids did not have a chance to become un-interested :)

Having said that, we did not just read the book.  While I read, the girls coloured the pictures that Dawnita provided in the book.  (There are also notebooking and lapbooking pages provided, which we will probably use if we do this study again when the kids are older.)

While I was reading we would pause to look at the star maps provided, especially when a specific star was named.  It was fun finding out the names of the stars in the constellations, as well as the constellations themselves.

After we finished reading the section, and took some time to review the star chart again, we then re-created the constellations with star stickers.

This was a great study!  I would highly recommend this study to anyone who wants a biblical look at the constellations!  The information was informative, yet simple to understand.  The pictures and star charts really helped us to be able to "see" the constellations.  I love that there are so many different ways to use this study too, with colouring pages, notebooking pages and lapbooking pages.  You can use whichever educational tool works best for your family!  It can be used in your homeschool, or for extra learning after school.  You could even use it for Sunday school, Bible study or family devotions!

Found it! What a great resource. One question: does the book tell stories like the constellation Virgo standing for the virgin birth of Jesus? I know some people like that idea while others think it's bologna. :-)

Good question, Cheri! Yes, that's one story about Virgo in the book. It also talks about how Virgo refers to the prophecy about the "Bride of Christ". I won't guarantee that all the stories about the constellations are true, but it is interesting to think about how God placed the stars in the sky the way He did for a reason :) And many of the stories about the constellations line up with Bible prophecies! Isn't that neat?

I love all the pictures Missy! How wonderful! ... yes, some may see some of this as bologna, but what tasty bologna it may be! LOL Prophecy can be elusive, so I really did try to present these as "What if...?" and "Maybe this is what the Lord meant..." Only HE really knows. It gets the children curious and interested in study. That is just so cool to see. :-) Thanks Missy!
