Around our place we are starting to see signs that we only have a couple more weeks of summer and then we will be jumping into the autumn harvest. The next few weeks will start getting really busy with bringing in our garden produce too. When that is done we will be able to get into the new school year. That means more math and reading and more structured learning again. But for now, we are still having a lot of fun learning through our summer unschooling and teachable moments!

Last year Princess grew lettuce for the first time and she loved it! She is in charge of growing our lettuce this year too :) When I thought about blogging about lettuce I realized that the usual salads and sandwiches that we use our lettuce for are rather boring for a blog post. So, I headed to Pinterest to find some interesting ways we could use lettuce.
I can tell we are having a good break from school because I am starting to get "the itch" to get back into our normal homeschooling routine :) (Does anyone else feel like that after a break?) I have been looking at curriculums and thinking about how we are going to do things this next year. But, in the meantime, we are still enjoying our summer unschooling break and the busyness of summer gardening.
Do you have a dolphin lover in your family? We do. Princess LOVES dolphins! We did a unit study to help her learn about dolphins, but we also use her interest to help her keep learning all the time and having fun while we do it :)
Yesterday we were watching Free Willy 2 as part of the unit study Princess is doing on dolphins and whales. In the movie some killer whales are trapped in a cove when an oil tanker runs aground and leaks oil into the ocean. The movie led to many questions from the kids! One of the questions that Princess asked was when the oil caught fire and there were flames on top of the ocean. She wondered how the water could be on fire. While trying to explain it, I realized it would probably make more sense to the kids if they could see it for themselves. When the movie was over, we went to the kitchen for a quick science experiment and discussion.
This year an over-riding theme has been coming up over and over again... At Thanksgiving I reviewed The November Planning Pack for Children, which included a list of ways to bless others... I had the opportunity to review the book, Why We Give Gifts at Christmas Time... The Christmas play our children are involved in is called We Three Spies and is about the Christmas Intelligence Kids (CIK) who give gifts in secret at Christmas time... All of this has led to some interesting and heart warming discussions and prayer with my children :) They have such big hearts and are so eager to jump at the chance to help someone! God has taught me so much through the faith and kindness of my children! My goal for Christmas this year is to really focus more on giving to others with my children! Here are 5 ways we have thought of to give to others together.
